Trump says indirect talks with Iran through Qatar could start this week

The signal comes a day after he said he had rejected Iran's proposal outright.

US President Donald Trump indicated to the American news site Axios that indirect talks with Iran, mediated by Qatar, could begin this week.

The remark came a day after he said he had rejected Iran's seven-day peace proposal. The Iranians want a deal, he said, but not the kind he wants, adding that they had not used their opportunity properly.

Trump also warned that he is still weighing the option of military action.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed that his country remains ready for talks and is awaiting a formal American response through the Qatari mediators.
