The United States Embassy in Addis Ababa issued a security alert on 7 October saying it was aware of reports of possible long-range attacks directed at Ethiopian military installations on several occasions in October. The embassy told US citizens not to travel to the Amhara region, including Lalibela, the Tigray region or the Afar region for any reason, and said those already in those areas should leave if it was safe to do so or shelter in place until conditions improved. It also advised citizens to stay away from Ethiopian military installations, to keep in contact with their airlines about flight operations, and to expect internet and telephone connections to be cut at any time. The embassy described Addis Ababa as stable but said there was continuing sporadic armed conflict and civil unrest in northern Ethiopia.
