Ethiopia's Justice Minister says transitional justice draft laws are complete and will be published in the coming days
Hana Arayaselassie said the drafts set up a Truth and Social Cohesion Commission, an independent special prosecutor's office with a dedicated court bench, and an Institutional Reform Commission.

The Reporter Ethiopia said Awol Sultan, director of the Justice Ministry's Human Rights Directorate, told the forum that participating organisations would keep full operational independence and that the ministry's role is that of facilitator. It said participants raised questions about whether civil society organisations can stay independent under a ministry-chaired platform, and about how participation by Tigray would be guaranteed.
Justice Minister Hana Arayaselassie said on Friday that Ethiopia has finished drafting the legal frameworks needed to carry out its national transitional justice policy and that the drafts will be made public in the coming days, The Reporter Ethiopia said. She was speaking at the launch of a joint consultative forum of the Ministry of Justice and civil society organisations in Addis Ababa. The report said the drafts provide for a Truth and Social Cohesion Commission to handle past human rights violations through truth-seeking, reconciliation, amnesty and reparations; an independent special prosecutor's office and a dedicated court bench for serious violations; and an Institutional Reform Commission. It said the drafting drew on more than 80 public and stakeholder forums and on the recommendations of the National Dialogue Commission, and that public consultations are expected to run for months in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa and the regional states. The Council of Ministers approved the overarching policy in 2024.
