Bloomberg reported on 30 September that Ethiopia plans to withdraw more than 3,000 soldiers from Somalia and redeploy them against the armed groups fighting federal forces in the north. The agency cited people familiar with the matter who were not authorised to speak publicly, and said the troops could begin leaving in the coming days or weeks.
A Somali defence ministry official said: "Ethiopia has not informed us of any plan to withdraw its troops from Somalia."
It is not clear whether the plan covers Ethiopian soldiers serving with the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), those under bilateral arrangements, or both. Neither government has announced a withdrawal.
The report follows the visit of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Addis Ababa. The report could not be independently verified.
