DW says residents reported 11 killed and 15 wounded at the Alamata market; the claim could not be verified

Deutsche Welle, reporting on 29 September, said residents of Alamata in southern Tigray described artillery fire on the town's Saturday market. It said the accounts could not be independently verified and that the Ethiopian army's spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

Deutsche Welle reported residents' accounts that 11 people were killed and 15 wounded at the Saturday market in Alamata. Residents blamed federal forces. The claims could not be independently verified and the Ethiopian defence forces' spokesperson did not respond.

Deutsche Welle reported on 29 September that a 45-year-old resident of Alamata said: "At the Saturday market in Alamata, 11 people were killed and 15 others were wounded." A 40-year-old resident of the town said federal government forces had fired artillery at the market. A 22-year-old woman in Selenwuha said: "I have lost six family members," describing relatives sheltering at home who were struck by heavy weaponry shelling and could not reach medical care. DW said these claims could not be independently verified and that the spokesperson for Ethiopia's defence forces had not responded to its request for comment by the time of publication. In the same report, Ethiopian lawyer Amdegebreal Admassu said attacks on hospitals, schools and religious institutions are war crimes under international law and Ethiopia's penal code. Mebrihi Birhane, vice director of Human Rights First Ethiopia, said: "The population must have access to essential services even in times of war."
