Ethiopians sweep Berlin Marathon as Assefa misses world record by 1:08

Guye Adola won the men's race and Tigst Assefa the women's, with Ethiopians taking five of the six podium places.

Guye Adola of Ethiopia won the men's Berlin Marathon in 2:02:51 and Tigst Assefa the women's race in 2:11:04, finishing 1:08 outside the world record with the third-fastest women's marathon time in history.

Guye Adola of Ethiopia won the men's Berlin Marathon on Sunday 27 September in 2:02:51, ahead of compatriot Gemechu Dida Diriba (2:03:19) and Gabriel Gerald Geay of Tanzania (2:03:59). In the women's race Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia won in 2:11:04, followed by Bedatu Hirpa (2:16:53) and Dera Dida (2:16:55), both also Ethiopian. RUN247 reported that Assefa was on course to break the women's world record through 40km but finished 1:08 outside Ruth Chepngetich's 2:09:56 mark; her time is the third-fastest women's marathon in history.
