Afar president accuses the Eritrean army of taking part in the fighting

Speaking to Al Jazeera, he called for African Union intervention. Eritrea has not responded.

The president of Ethiopia's Afar region made an accusation directed at the Eritrean government on Monday morning.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, he said the Eritrean army is taking part directly in the war being waged against the region, with its own command and heavy weapons.

He further alleged that Eritrean forces had cut the road between Ethiopia and Djibouti in an effort to stop the region's national supply line from reaching Djibouti's ports.

Saying the current war is beyond the capacity of the region's own forces, the president said they are facing the army of an entire country, and asked the African Union to intervene on the grounds that the problem amounts to an attempt to change borders by force.

No statement has been issued by Eritrea in response to the accusation.
