Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel rejects Abiy's account of Eritrea's industry and says Ethiopia has taken up to 90 billion dollars in aid over 35 years.
Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel has rejected Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's account of Eritrea's industrial history, Dawan Africa reported from Asmara. In remarks on 20 October carried by the Ethiopian News Agency, Abiy said Eritreans had lost assets they once held since secession, saying Massawa had been emptied and Assab reduced to a ghost town. Yemane said the factories were founded by Italy, that many were dismantled by Britain as war reparations and that the rest were transferred to Ethiopia under Haile Selassie. He also said Ethiopia had received an estimated 80 to 90 billion dollars in international aid over 35 years without ending poverty and hunger, and that Abiy's government had received more than 30 billion dollars in assistance over the past eight years. The poverty figures he cited have not been verified. Asmara rejects Ethiopia's demand for sea access and for an Ethiopian naval presence on the Eritrean coast.
