Seventeen killed in shooting at South African bar
Eight gunmen opened fire at a bar west of Johannesburg, killing 17 and wounding 15, police say. A separate attack near Cape Town killed 10.
South African police said the death toll from two township shootings has risen to 27. Seventeen people were killed and 15 wounded at a tavern in Extension 3, Wedela, in Gauteng province at about 9:30pm on Saturday, and ten more were killed and 11 wounded at a store in Lwandle, near Cape Town, after midnight on Sunday. Police Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said 17 murder and 15 attempted murder cases had been opened, and that officers were searching for eight suspects reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. No arrests have been announced and the motive is not known.

Police said the attackers allegedly searched some patrons and took their mobile phones before fleeing in two unidentified vehicles, and that two vehicles were set alight. The motive was not known. Police said they had mobilised a team of detectives and specialised units to trace and apprehend the suspects. In a separate attack early on Sunday, 10 people were killed and 11 wounded at an entertainment venue near Cape Town.
