Isaias Afwerki travels to Egypt for a heads-of-state summit on Red Sea and Nile Basin security

Eritrea's Ministry of Information says the visit is at President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi's invitation and that the summit covers the Red Sea region, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Gulf and the Nile Basin.

The National reported on Sunday that the four-way summit at New Alamein, bringing together the leaders of Egypt, Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia, was expected to announce a widening of military cooperation between the four states. The paper quoted an unnamed source as saying one aim would be "broadening the extent of military cooperation to safeguard the region and protect Red Sea shipping". The report also said Egypt keeps about 15,000 military personnel in Somalia and uses naval and army facilities in Eritrea. The report could not be independently verified.

Egypt's presidency said President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi will take part on Sunday in the Alamein Consultative Summit, bringing together the leaders of Egypt, Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia, Ahram Online reported. Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sudan's Sovereign Council chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan are due to attend. The presidency said the meeting is part of consultation and coordination on regional issues of mutual concern.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki at New Alamein on Saturday and said Egypt categorically rejects any violation of state sovereignty or infringement of territorial integrity, pledging to strengthen cooperation on Red Sea security, according to Egyptian presidency spokesman Mohamed El-Shennawy. Isaias said there was significant alignment of views between Eritrea and Egypt on regional developments. The spokesman said the four-way summit with Sudan and Somalia will be held on Sunday 4 October.

Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel said on X that the Cairo summit is a continuation of periodic forums on the wider neighbourhood. Dawan reported that a four-way meeting between Sisi, Isaias Afwerki, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Abdel Fattah al-Burhan is expected at the Alamein Africa Forum, which more than 20 heads of state and government or their representatives are due to attend.
