A senior Eritrean government delegation led by Foreign Minister Osman Saleh met United States officials in Washington on 1 October, Shabait reported. The delegation held talks with Allison Hooker, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, and Frank Garcia, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. Osman Saleh welcomed the removal of unilateral sanctions, describing it as "a positive and vital step towards opening a new chapter in Eritrea-US relations". Shabait said the talks covered trade and investment and Eritrea's role in promoting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Nile Basin, and that the two sides agreed to hold further substantive consultations. Hooker said the removal of the sanctions stemmed from President Trump's commitment to nurturing bilateral partnerships based on mutual benefit.
