UN rights chief says five schools in Tigray were hit by airstrikes, urges de-escalation

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said on 25 September that he was deeply alarmed by the harm to civilians from the fighting in northern Ethiopia. His office said Ethiopian National Defence Force airstrikes, including drone strikes, hit five schools in Tigray on 22 September and that a mortar strike in Kobo killed civilians. Türk urged all parties to de-escalate and to allow unimpeded humanitarian access.

His office said airstrikes, including drone strikes, by the Ethiopian National Defence Force hit five schools in Tigray on 22 September, killing and injuring people, and that a mortar strike in the town of Kobo in Amhara killed civilians. It also cited the takeover of the airports at Mekelle, Axum and Shire by the TPLF, reports of forced mass recruitment of civilians and children, and killings, torture, arbitrary detention and arbitrary conscription by government forces. Türk called on all parties to urgently de-escalate tensions and avoid a return to full-scale war, to take all measures needed to protect civilians from harm, and to allow safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to all who need it.
