At least 27 killed in two mass shootings in South African townships

South African police say 27 people were killed and 26 wounded in attacks at Wedela and Lwandle. No arrests have been made.

The South African Police Service said 17 people were killed and at least 15 wounded when eight gunmen with AK-47 rifles and pistols attacked a tavern in Wedela township, south-west of Johannesburg, on Saturday night, and that 10 more were killed and 11 wounded in a second shooting in Lwandle township near Cape Town early on Sunday. Police said no arrests had been made and gave no motive.

The South African Police Service said 17 people — 13 men and four women — were killed and at least 15 wounded when eight attackers armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire at a tavern in Wedela township, south-west of Johannesburg, at about 9:30pm on Saturday. Police said 10 more people were killed and 11 wounded in a second shooting in Lwandle township near Cape Town after 1am on Sunday. Police said no arrests had been made and gave no motive for either attack. The shootings came five days after a mass shooting near Durban in which at least 11 people were killed.
