Ethiopia's Navy Commander-in-Chief, Vice Admiral Kindu Gezu, said the force is expanding its training capacity, infrastructure and specialised combat units in order to protect national interests and counter security threats, in an interview with the state broadcaster EBC. He said the navy had built up its manpower, training, armaments and institutional structures from scratch, and that it is working to neutralise security threats from afar and build a reliable, robust capability. He said a basic sailors' training centre at Bishoftu has taken in its first cohort, the navy headquarters is complete, and marine commando battalions and specialist teams have been trained inside and outside the country. He added that Ethiopian Maritime and Logistics and Bahir Dar University's Maritime Institute support the navy. Addis Standard reported the interview. Ethiopia has no coastline; Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has described sea access as a national strategic interest, and Ethiopia and Eritrea severed diplomatic relations at the start of October.
