Afar party chief says Tigray forces seized three towns in Zones 2 and 4; AFP told Erebti has fallen
The fighting in northern Ethiopia widens into the Afar region, on the road to the Red Sea and Djibouti.
Al Jazeera reported that Mohamed Hussein, head of the ruling party in Ethiopia's Afar region, said Tigray forces had entered Zones 2 and 4 and seized three towns, which he did not name. A humanitarian source told AFP that Erebti fell on Sunday after being pounded by heavy artillery, that the fighters were advancing towards Afdeera, and that at least 150,000 people have been displaced in Afar. The claims could not be independently verified.

He did not name the three towns. Separately, a humanitarian source told AFP that the Afar town of Erebti, near the border with Tigray, fell to the fighters on Sunday after being pounded by heavy artillery, and that they were advancing towards Afdeera, a town about 100km to the east. The same source estimated that at least 150,000 people have been displaced in Afar but said precise numbers were impossible to give. The claims could not be independently verified, and neither the Ethiopian federal government nor the Tigray forces had responded publicly to the reported fall of Erebti.
