The Ethiopian News Agency and Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported that Brigadier General Derbie Mekuriaw, deputy commissioner of the National Rehabilitation Commission, called on armed fighters in Tigray to hand over their weapons to the Ethiopian National Defence Force and enter demobilisation centres prepared in and around Mekelle. The appeal follows the federal takeover of Mekelle.
Ethiopia's National Rehabilitation Commission called on armed fighters in Tigray to hand over their weapons to Ethiopian National Defence Force units and to enter demobilisation centres it says are prepared in and around Mekelle. Deputy Commissioner Brigadier General Derbie Mekuriaw said: "By exiting this chaotic life and stepping out from the fire of war and reporting to the Defense Force, you can enter the demobilization centers prepared." The commission said fighters could hand over their arms to locally stationed army units either individually or in organised groups, and cited the rehabilitation of the "Army 70" group that returned from Sudan as an example. The commission was established under the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement, and its disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration process has been running since 2024.
