UN says more than 400 Sudanese are crossing into Chad every day

The UN refugee agency UNHCR says more than 400 Sudanese are crossing daily into eastern Chad through the Adre and Tine border points, taking arrivals this year past 55,000 and the total since April 2023 close to one million. Regional refugee coordinator Mamadou Dian Balde said transit and reception teams are prioritising urgent medical, psychosocial and protection services, as newly arriving women and girls describe abductions and sexual violence on the escape routes. UNHCR says a transit site at Tine sheltering more than 4,300 people faces severe water and sanitation shortages, and that its 1.6 billion dollar regional response plan for 2026 is only 20 percent funded.
