Red Cross moves 161 people, including African Union monitors and Ethiopian Airlines staff, from Mekelle to Semera

The ICRC said it acted as a neutral and independent intermediary at the request and with the approval of all the authorities concerned.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said in a statement that it moved 161 people from Mekelle to Semera on Monday 28 September, among them Federal Police personnel and their families, Ethiopian Airlines staff and their families, Civil Aviation Security personnel, African Union monitors and members of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society. The Eastleigh Voice reported that Tigray forces seized Mekelle airport last week, after which Ethiopian Airlines suspended its flights to the region.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said it moved 161 people from Mekelle in Tigray to Semera in the Afar region on Monday 28 September, acting as a neutral and independent intermediary at the request and with the approval of all the authorities concerned. It said those moved included Ethiopian Federal Police personnel and their family members, Ethiopian Airlines staff and their family members, Civil Aviation Security personnel, African Union monitors and members of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society. They travelled in buses marked with the Red Cross emblem, accompanied by ICRC staff.
