Explosion heard at Kombolcha airport as flights are suspended

Residents say a heavy blast was heard in the early hours of Monday inside the airport grounds.

EEPA said in its situation report of 28 September that conflicting information was circulating about strikes on the Bishoftu air force base outside Addis Ababa, with a first strike reported on 26 September and a second on 27 September. The reports could not be independently verified.

Ethiopian reports, citing residents, say a heavy explosion was heard inside the grounds of Kombolcha airport at around 2:30am on Monday 28 September.

Flights have been suspended for the time being.

The reports said a strict cordon was imposed after the blast, barring anyone from entering the airport grounds, and that security forces have placed the area under full control.

The incident follows reports of two separate attacks the previous day on the Ethiopian air force base at Bishoftu. No official statement has been issued by the authorities about either event.
