Ethiopian federal police begin security operations in Mekelle
Patrols started on Friday 9 October, with residents urged to co-operate. No new local administration has been formed.

With TPLF forces withdrawn from Mekelle and efforts under way to set up a new civil administration, Ethiopia’s federal police began security operations in the regional capital on Friday 9 October 2026.
Officers used loudspeaker vehicles to call on residents to co-operate in restoring security and establishing a new administration, the Associated Press reports.
Although the federal police have started work, no new local administration had been formed as of Friday.
The war that reignited in late September has put the November 2022 Pretoria peace agreement at risk, and rising tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea has added to the instability in northern Ethiopia.
