Remy Saki Bokinda, deputy governor of Kwango province in south-western Democratic Republic of the Congo, said 17 people were killed when a small aircraft operated by Tracep Congo Aviation crashed in the town of Kenge on Friday. The toll was revised up from an initial 13 once the fire in the wreckage was brought under control. Among the dead were two senior military officials: Lieutenant General Joseph Mutombo, the first president of the High Military Court, and Lieutenant General Lucien-Rene Likulia, the military's auditor general. The other victims were civilians, including a baby. The aircraft was flying from Kikwit to Kinshasa when it developed a technical fault and attempted an emergency landing. "With no landing strip available in Kenge, the plane crashed into a residential plot," Bokinda said, and it then caught fire.
