Ethiopian army chief says forces are answering with wisdom and restraint
In his first public remarks on the fighting, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula signalled the army command prefers strategic calm to a large-scale confrontation.
Al Jazeera reported on 27 September that Ethiopia's Chief of General Staff, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, said the army is responding to provocation on the Tigray front with wisdom and restraint, in his first public comments on the fighting. He accused Eritrea of funding and supporting armed groups to weaken Ethiopia. The army command indicated it prefers strategic calm to a large-scale military confrontation, saying support for the Tigray front is declining and its leadership divided. The army has said it killed 272 Tigrayan fighters and wounded 260 in North Wollo.
