Six US senators urge Rubio to push for a return to Tigray talks and criticise the lapse of sanctions

The letter, released by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, says the Pretoria Agreement is unravelling and cites a drone strike on a vehicle carrying US-funded food aid in north-western Tigray.

A statement released by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on 28 September said six senators had written to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging him to engage Ethiopia's government and the TPLF leadership to halt the fighting and return to mediation, and criticising the lapse of sanctions imposed on rights violators in Tigray.

Six US senators — Jeanne Shaheen, Cory Booker, Chris Coons, Jeff Merkley, Chris Van Hollen and Tim Kaine — wrote to Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 28 September, urging him to engage Ethiopia's federal government, the TPLF leadership and associated armed groups to stop the renewed conflict and return to mediation immediately.

The letter, released by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the fighting signals the unravelling of the African Union-brokered Pretoria Agreement that ended the 2020-2022 war. The senators criticised the expiry of sanctions on human rights violators in Tigray imposed under Executive Order 14046, and cited a drone strike on a vehicle carrying US-funded food aid in north-western Tigray, which they said damaged supplies and disrupted deliveries.

"The stakes are too high to risk another conflict in an already volatile Horn of Africa," the senators said. There has been no response from the Ethiopian government to the letter.
