Al Jazeera reported that the ten Eritrean diplomats Ethiopia ordered out include the embassy chargé d'affaires and officials accredited to the African Union. Ethiopia's foreign ministry said the diplomats posed "a direct threat to Ethiopia's national security".
Eritrea has responded. Its Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release on 1 October that it had "no option but to reciprocate in kind and sever all diplomatic ties with Ethiopia". It called Ethiopia's accusations "astounding" and said it was Ethiopia that had invaded Eritrean ports and coastal areas and had hosted and armed Eritrean armed opposition groups.

Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on 1 October that it had decided to close Ethiopia's embassy in Asmara and had declared 10 Eritrean diplomats persona non grata, ordering them to leave the country within 48 hours. The ministry said the closure was a response to Eritrea's "direct and indirect acts of hostility and belligerence against Ethiopia". It accused the diplomats of activities posing a direct threat to Ethiopia's national security and of breaching the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The ministry added that Ethiopia continues to value the historical, cultural and people-to-people ties between the two peoples and remains committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. Reuters said Eritrea's information minister did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The announcement came hours after overnight explosions in Addis Ababa.
