Pre-match: Eritrea are coached by Egyptian Hesham Yakan, their first foreign coach in 18 years. Only three of the 30-man squad are home-based — captain Abelom Teklezghi, Nahom Tadesse and striker Romel Abdu. Eritrea drew 1-1 with Kenya in their opening Group D fixture.

The South African Football Association said on 29 September that the match is being played in Cairo because Eritrea has no CAF-accredited stadium. Coach Pitso Mosimane said: "I am happy with the result we got... we need to show the same attitude against Eritrea." Captain Ronwen Williams said the players had been open to all the changes the coach has made.

Eritrea's coach Hesham Yakan has rebuilt the squad after the player defections in March, bringing in 14 debutants drawn from 13 different countries. Jamal Ali is a doubt with injury. Ali Sulieman remains the main attacking threat.

South Africa are led by Pitso Mosimane and are without five players through injury, among them Evidence Makgopa and Lyle Foster.
