EU says two member states are ready to send ships to the Red Sea

Kaja Kallas did not name the countries, and said Houthi attacks have left Operation Aspides unable to work fully.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and vice-president of the European Commission, said there are indications that two member states are ready to send ships to counter Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

Speaking after a meeting of EU defence ministers in Brussels on Monday 28 September, she said the countries had indicated at the meeting that they could make further vessels available. She did not name them.

She argued that the growing scale of Houthi attacks has left the bloc's Red Sea mission, Operation Aspides, unable to operate fully.

She also said that more commercial ships now need escorts than the EU has warships available to escort them.

France has deployed additional escorts to the Red Sea and called on other member states to contribute, while the United Kingdom has provided aircraft support.
