Drone strike in Sudan kills at least 30 people
Women and children are among the dead at Abu Shandi; officials say the drone came from Ethiopia.
At least 30 people, among them women and children, were killed in a drone strike near a displacement camp in Sudan’s Blue Nile state on Tuesday 6 October, state officials and witnesses say.
The strike hit a place called Abu Shandi in the Wad al-Mahi area, about 50km east of Damazin. Sudanese media report that many of the victims were artisanal gold miners working nearby.
The United Nations said initial reports put the death toll at at least 40, while Sudanese doctors said 31 people were killed and 19 wounded. Local officials and doctors attribute the attack to Rapid Support Forces.
Mahmoud al-Sheikh, the administrator of Wad al-Mahi, told AFP that the drone had been launched from inside Ethiopia. The Sudan Doctors Network also reported that 25 civilians were killed at Um Badr in North Kordofan on 3 October.
