Hundreds of schools shut as student protests spread across France

Students are protesting over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and ageing school buildings

NatnaTV map — cities where protests have been reported, built from Natural Earth boundary data

Students across France have taken to the streets over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and ageing school buildings, and hundreds of schools have closed as the protests continue.

The movement began in Paris earlier this week and has since spread to other cities.

The education minister told French media that 65 school staff and 40 teachers had been injured, and that 1,949 people were detained on Tuesday alone.

The justice minister said it was not certain that all of those detained were students, and that acts such as targeting buses and setting fire to schools showed the situation had moved beyond protest.

French media report that around 100 schools have been damaged so far.
