Guterres says the fighting in northern Ethiopia must stop immediately
The UN chief voices added concern over reports that Eritrean forces entered Ethiopia.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the conflict that has flared again in the Tigray, Afar and Amhara regions of Ethiopia.
In a statement issued on Friday 9 October, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Guterres strongly urged all parties in Ethiopia to stop the fighting immediately and return to dialogue under the Pretoria peace agreement.
The Secretary-General said reports that Eritrean forces had entered Ethiopia were a further source of concern, and reminded all states in the region of their obligation under the UN Charter to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
He called on countries with influence over the parties to work to reduce tension, and confirmed his readiness to contribute to mediation towards a peaceful settlement.
