Egypt is ready to act over the Red Sea, analysts say
Cairo will not stand by if Ethiopia’s moves endanger regional and maritime security.
Egypt is said to be ready to act if current developments in Ethiopia directly threaten the security of the Red Sea region and the Horn of Africa.
Egyptian journalist Khaled Mahmoud of Asharq Al-Awsat says Cairo is closely following Ethiopia’s moves, beyond the conflict in Tigray and the friction with Eritrea.
Any attempt to create a new military reality on the Red Sea coast, or to put Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity at risk, would directly affect the regional balance of power, maritime security and Egypt’s relations with Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia, he said.
Egypt has many options and is unlikely to stand by while anyone tries to change the balance of power in this strategically important region, he added, warning that the war being contemplated could bring destructive consequences for the Ethiopian people for decades.
