Yemane: the Prosperity Party is blaming neighbours for problems it created

After Ethiopia's chief of general staff, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, accused neighbouring Eritrea and Sudan of supporting a newly formed alliance of armed and political groups, Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel responded on his X account on Monday 28 September.

He said the Prosperity Party is blaming its neighbours for problems of its own making over roughly three years, and set out three episodes in sequence to make the point.

First, that in October 2023 the party formally launched its campaign to secure sovereign sea access peacefully, and by force if necessary.

Second, that driven by the same ambition it attempted to recognise Somaliland, an entity of Somalia that has no international recognition, in violation of another state's sovereign rights.

Third, that acting as the Emirates' proxy in the Horn of Africa it worked to prolong the war in Sudan, hosting Rapid Support Forces units in military camps on its territory and providing the ground for drone attacks on the Sudanese army, in breach of international law.

The minister concluded that the Prosperity Party governing Ethiopia remains a source of regional tension.
