DW fact check: the Ethiopian army has not entered Eritrea

Claims circulating on social media that Debay Sima had been captured are false, it found.

The German broadcaster Deutsche Welle has found that claims circulating widely on social media on Sunday, saying Ethiopian troops had crossed into Eritrea, are false.

The posts said Ethiopian forces had moved beyond the town of Bure and taken Debay Sima, a village inside Eritrea.

Citing eyewitnesses, DW confirmed that Ethiopian troops have not moved beyond Elidar and Bure into Eritrean territory.

The check comes at a time when officials and outlets are presenting border movements that are not in fact happening.
