Wars are inflicting severe environmental damage, reports say
The war in Ukraine has added more than 310 million tonnes of carbon dioxide to the air.

Beyond their human and material cost, wars and armed conflicts are causing alarming environmental damage, according to new reports.
The reports found that in 2025 and 2026 more than 5 per cent of global polluting gas emissions were the result of war and conflict.
The war in Ukraine, which has continued since 2022, is said to have released more than 310 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, while fires caused by the fighting have destroyed over 100,000 hectares of forest.
Environmental specialists estimate that military operations in the Middle East added some 400 million quintals of polluting gases to the atmosphere in two years alone.
They also say the hazardous contamination of water and soil caused by munitions is increasing year on year.
