US said to be going its own way on Ukraine
Its proposal to release frozen Russian assets has not been accepted in Europe.

As European Union leaders met in Brussels and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, the Financial Times reported that the United States is pursuing its own course.
Washington has proposed releasing billions of dollars of Russian assets frozen by the European Union, as a way of creating pressure to end the war.
Russia has warned that it will respond forcefully if the frozen funds are handed to Ukraine.
Ukraine’s European partners have not accepted the proposal. Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, said the frozen capital is a matter for the European Union alone.
Western states froze an estimated $300bn in Russian assets after the war began in 2022. Moscow has condemned the measure as open theft.
