US embassy in Asmara issues a security alert
Americans are urged to plan their own departure and keep travel documents ready.
The US embassy in Eritrea warned on Friday 9 October that fighting continues in northern Ethiopia near the Eritrean border, and advised American citizens in Eritrea to take extra care.
The embassy said that because Eritrea does not recognise dual nationality, the assistance it can offer to US-Eritrean dual nationals may be limited.
Embassy staff are not able to travel more than 25km outside Asmara, so the help available to Americans moving beyond that radius is restricted, the statement said.
The embassy advised citizens to make their own plans to leave Eritrea without waiting for US government assistance, to keep current travel documents to hand, and to follow local media.
