Tigray forces have taken control of Alula Aba Nega International Airport in Mekelle. The handover happened overnight without an exchange of fire, and no casualties or damage to property were reported.

Ethiopian Airlines confirmed on 23 September that it has suspended flights to Mekelle, Axum and Shire until further notice.

The airline gave no reason in its statement, saying only that it apologised to customers for the disruption and would notify them before services resume.

Federal government institutions in Mekelle that had been guarded by federal police were also handed over to Tigray forces, again without any shooting.
