Ethiopian commanders put Eritrean sovereignty under serious threat
Air force chief General Yilma Merdassa said the day Ethiopia opens its sea access is close at hand.

In breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and of African Union agreements, successive warlike statements by senior Ethiopian military commanders about the port of Assab have further deepened the security crisis in the Horn of Africa, according to a report.
The commander of the Ethiopian Air Force, General Yilma Merdassa, declared that "the day Ethiopia opens the sea access that has been closed to it for many years, and asserts its sovereignty, is near."
Field Marshal Birhanu Jula is also on record telling the Ethiopian army, "we can fight a country that denies us a port."
Since 2023 Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has repeatedly told parliament and public forums that the port of Assab is Ethiopia's historic right and that the country should have a sovereign maritime boundary and a navy, by force if necessary.
The report concludes that Eritrea, faced with continuous threats of war running from the head of state down to army commanders, has every legal right to act in self-defence and to take proportionate security precautions.
