Ethiopia closes its embassy in Asmara and orders ten Eritrean diplomats out within 48 hours
Ethiopia's foreign ministry says the decision follows "direct and indirect acts of hostility and belligerence by Eritrea"; Eritrea has not responded.

Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday 1 October 2026 that it had decided to close its embassy in Asmara and had declared ten Eritrean diplomats based in Addis Ababa persona non grata.
The ministry said the ten diplomats had been ordered to leave Ethiopia within 48 hours.
It said the decision followed "direct and indirect acts of hostility and belligerence by Eritrea".
The ministry accused the diplomats of involvement in activities that posed a direct threat to Ethiopia's national security, saying this was in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
Ethiopia's commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes remained unchanged, the statement added, saying the country was ready to advance "lasting peace, security and regional integration" in the Horn of Africa.
The ministry also said Ethiopia valued its historical, cultural and people-to-people ties with Eritrea, and called on the Eritrean government to cease its hostile conduct.
The Eritrean government had issued no response to the decision at the time of writing.
