Ethiopian ambassador warns recognising Somaliland would strengthen al-Shabaab
Tesfaye Yilma says such a step would put regional stability at serious risk.

Ethiopia’s ambassador to Israel, Tesfaye Yilma, has said that if Ethiopia decided to recognise Somaliland as a state it would embolden al-Shabaab, the group linked to al-Qaeda, and place regional stability in grave danger.
In an interview with the i24News channel, the ambassador said such a move would push the sovereign government of Somalia to demand the immediate withdrawal of Ethiopian troops serving in regional counter-terrorism operations.
That withdrawal, he warned, would in turn give the group additional capacity and space, strengthening it.
The warning follows recent remarks by Somaliland’s president that his administration would stand alongside Ethiopia.
