Afar sultan says this is not our war
Ahmed Alimirah Hanfare says Afar people must not be sent to fight for others’ political gain.

The sultan of Ethiopia’s Afar sultanate, Ahmed Alimirah Hanfare, has issued a statement opposing plans for war against Eritrea and the annexation of Assab.
In a message headed This is not our war, he said Afar people are being sent to fight and die for the political profit of others.
Noting that the Afar are among the most impoverished and economically neglected communities in Ethiopia, he said they should not be drawn into a war that is not theirs.
Those who want war shout loudest and expect to win, the sultan said, but they are blind to the people who will have to live in peace afterwards.
He also criticised the appetite for invading Eritrea, saying it is driven by a narrative about access to the sea.
