An Egyptian military spokesman said the armed forces and the police were carrying out a third phase of a campaign against illicit gold prospecting in the Eastern Desert, targeting criminal networks, and that warning leaflets had been dropped beforehand. Sudan Tribune said the statement did not address Saturday's strikes or the deaths, and that Egypt has still neither confirmed nor denied bombing the miners.
Sudan's Sovereign Council media office said Abdel Fattah al-Burhan had ordered a fact-finding committee, drawn from the public prosecution, the judiciary and the security bodies, into Saturday's air strikes on gold prospecting sites in the Shamal al-Wadi area of northern Red Sea State, near the Egyptian border.
Emergency Lawyers said Egyptian fighter jets bombed civilian gold miners in the northern Wadi area inside Sudan, killing at least 72. Sudan Tribune said three survivors put the toll above 200 and that more than 15,000 workers fled. Egypt has not commented and the account could not be independently verified.
