Reuters says an opposition source claimed responsibility for the drone strikes in Addis Ababa and said they targeted the military headquarters — the first drone attack on the capital claimed by anti-government forces. Reuters saw no visible damage near the base. The prime minister's office, the federal government, the army and the TPLF all declined to comment.
Middle East Eye reported on 1 October that Western and regional officials had confirmed to it that a drone strike hit the Ethiopian National Defence Force headquarters in the Tor Hayloch area of Addis Ababa. AFP reported on 1 October that an explosion struck the Ethiopian National Defence Force headquarters in the Tor Hayloch area of Addis Ababa between midnight and 1am local time. The prime minister's office and the army spokesman did not respond to AFP's requests for comment.
Reuters reported on 1 October that a source linked to the opposition alliance said the group had carried out several drone strikes in Addis Ababa, including some targeting the military's headquarters. Reuters said it could not independently verify the claim, and that spokespeople for the office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the federal government and the military did not immediately respond to requests for comment. If confirmed, the strikes would be the first known drone attack by anti-government forces on the Ethiopian capital.
The Associated Press reported on 1 October that an intelligence service official, not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed three blasts in different parts of Addis Ababa. A diplomatic source said an explosion was heard at about 7pm near the defence headquarters, and residents there said another blast was heard near a factory after midnight. The official declined to give further details. AP said officials had not established whether the blasts were an attack or part of training exercises at the defence headquarters.
Reuters reported on 1 October that a source linked to the opposition alliance fighting federal forces in northern Ethiopia said the alliance had carried out several drone strikes in Addis Ababa, including some targeting the military's headquarters. Reuters said it could not independently verify the claim, and that spokespeople for the Prime Minister's office, the federal government and the military did not respond to requests for comment. Reuters also reported that the national intelligence service banned all drone flights over Addis Ababa and its surroundings on Wednesday for security reasons.
Bloomberg reported on 1 October that two explosions were heard in Addis Ababa and that drone flights over the capital had been suspended. No damage or casualties were reported, and the account could not be independently verified. The federal government has made no statement.
