AFP reported on Friday that the conflict monitor ACLED says pro-government forces have regained the Afar towns of Abala, Erebti and Megale. A source in Afar told AFP "the TPLF is out of Afar as of yesterday", adding that there was no access to food in the north. The Critical Threats Project said the Ethiopian military had largely repelled the rebel offensive and was pushing into Tigray along three axes towards Mekelle. The accounts could not be independently verified.
Al Jazeera reports that Afar deputy president Ahmed Hussein said the region faced an unprecedented attack aimed at dismantling the regional administration and installing figures loyal to Eritrea. He called on Eritrea to withdraw from Afar territory and said Asmara was responsible for the safety of civilians in areas held by opposition forces. More than 80,000 Afar residents remain trapped in the conflict zone.
Reuters says federal forces have retaken Erebti in Afar, a town opposition forces had seized earlier. Al Jazeera reported unconfirmed accounts that Abaala was also retaken, and said about 80,000 Afar residents remain trapped in the fighting.
Al Jazeera reported on 1 October that Afar's deputy governor, Ahmed Hussein, said more than 80,000 residents remain trapped in areas affected by the fighting.
An Afar government official told Reuters on 1 October that federal and regional forces had recaptured the towns of Erebti and Abaala, near the border with Tigray. Both towns had earlier been reported taken by the alliance fighting the government. Reuters said the account could not be independently verified.
Al Jazeera reported on 29 September that the governor of Afar region said Eritrean forces were taking part in the fighting and controlled more than two-thirds of the region. Eritrea has not responded to the allegation, which could not be independently verified.
No new development reported overnight. Al Jazeera, Addis Standard and ACLED have published nothing later than 29 September.
A humanitarian source cited by AFP estimates at least 150,000 people displaced in the Afar region. The figure could not be independently verified.
Tigray forces are reported to be advancing on Afdeera, about 100 kilometres east of Erebti.
Tigray forces took the Zone Two town of Erebti after heavy artillery bombardment.
Telephone and internet links in the area are disrupted, making reports hard to verify independently.
