OCHA said fighting over key towns in northern Ethiopia has closed roads and disrupted the movement of people and humanitarian supplies, and that humanitarian operations in Tigray are approaching a standstill because of insecurity and access constraints. It said hospitals in Korem and Alamata had received 480 casualties and that emergency supplies in neighbouring Amhara region were exhausted. A government assessment found tens of thousands displaced from Afar, with no verified displacement figures for Tigray and Amhara. OCHA called for the protection of aid workers and for safe, unimpeded humanitarian access.
OCHA said on 1 October that escalating drone activity and airstrikes in northern Ethiopia are disrupting humanitarian operations. It said hospitals in Korem and Alamata have received 480 casualties, and that aid work in Tigray is "nearing a standstill because of insecurity and severe access constraints". It also said tens of thousands have fled their homes in Afar, on a preliminary government assessment.
Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said on 1 October that the renewed fighting "risks deepening suffering in a region still bearing the scars of the last conflict" and that "humanitarians need safe, unimpeded access to reach people". The UN said flights to Tigray remain suspended, hospitals are receiving large numbers of injured, insecurity persists in North Wollo and Wag Himra in Amhara, and one aid convoy travelled from Sekota to Lalibela.
Agenzia Fides reported on 1 October that Tesfaselassie Medhin, the Eparch of Adigrat, said the area is "completely isolated, communications are blocked". He said banks remain closed and that it is uncertain how schools and seminaries will continue, and that humanitarian access and dialogue for peace are urgently needed.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said hospitals in Korem and Alamata have received 480 casualties, and that aid operations in Tigray are "nearing a standstill because of insecurity and severe access constraints". OCHA said escalating drone activity and airstrikes in northern Ethiopia are putting civilians and civic infrastructure at growing risk, and that preliminary findings from a government-led assessment show tens of thousands have fled their homes in Afar.
The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia, Ozonnia Ojielo, said more than 720 wounded people arrived at hospitals in Tigray in the week to 28 September. He said at least ten humanitarian vehicles had been seized by armed groups, only two of them recovered, that aid workers had faced kidnapping, extortion and harassment, and that aid organisations must be allowed safe and unhindered access.
Ozonnia Ojielo, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia, said in remarks reported by Addis Standard on 30 September that at least 10 humanitarian vehicles had been seized by armed groups, only two of them recovered, and that the airports at Mekelle, Axum and Shire had been seized. He said aid workers and assets "are protected under international humanitarian law and must never be targeted".
The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia, Ozonnia Ojielo, said on 30 September that armed groups had seized at least 10 humanitarian vehicles in northern Ethiopia and that only two had been recovered, and that aid workers had faced kidnapping, extortion and harassment. He demanded the immediate and unconditional return of the vehicles and said more than 720 wounded people had reached hospitals since 22 September.
OCHA said on 29 September that aid work in northern Ethiopia is being held back by disrupted telecommunications, suspended flights to and from Tigray and some locations in Amhara, and restrictions on key roads, and that several partners have scaled back or suspended their activities.
