Residents of Alamata told Deutsche Welle that 11 people were killed and 15 wounded in an attack on the town's Saturday market. A woman from Selenwuha said she lost six relatives when heavy weapons struck homes. Militia members blamed government forces for the shelling. Al Jazeera reported on 29 September that a military source told it government forces were "already advanced and heading towards or surrounding" Mekelle. Al Jazeera said the Tigray Peace Force had announced it took Alamata, about 120km south of Mekelle, in coordination with the national army, and that Reuters had verified video showing soldiers carrying Ethiopian flags through the town. Reuters reported on 28 September that Ethiopian federal troops and allied militiamen had taken Alamata, an important supply hub for troops, food and fuel about 120km south of Mekelle. Reuters said it could not verify the footage, but two diplomatic sources confirmed the town had fallen, and a source with links to pro-opposition forces said they were retreating from Alamata. Médecins Sans Frontières said on 28 September that the number of war-wounded reaching the hospitals it supports in Korem and Alamata rose from about 180 in the first 48 hours of the escalation to more than 420 between 22 and 25 September, and that more than 300 wounded had reached Suhul Hospital in Shire by 25 September. MSF said it had suspended its activities at Alamata hospital and its outreach work because of the security situation, and called the situation in northern Ethiopia "very worrying".

Martin Plaut wrote in an assessment on 28 September that Sekota and Waja have changed hands repeatedly, with Tigray forces and Fano mounting coordinated assaults while the Ethiopian army holds key defensive positions. The assessment could not be independently verified.

Al Jazeera reported that the Ethiopian army had recaptured Sekota, the seat of the Wag Hemra zone in Amhara, from Tigrayan forces.
