Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Saturday that Egypt has "absolutely nothing to do with what is happening inside Ethiopia", speaking at the Alamein Africa Forum in New Alamein. He called Ethiopia's accusation that Egypt, Sudan and Eritrea are backing opposition forces "a blatant attempt to divert attention from what is happening internally or to pin these crises on external parties". Egypt Today reported the remarks.

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said Egypt was leaving "space for diplomacy and peaceful solutions" while protecting its national interests, The National reported on Friday. His remarks followed the tit-for-tat expulsion of diplomats by Ethiopia and Egypt.

The National reported on Friday that the Egyptian diplomat Ethiopia ordered out is Ahmed Moharam Ahmed Soliman, and that he was given 48 hours to leave. A Cairo source quoted by the paper said Egypt "consistently rejects interference in the internal affairs of other countries".

Egypt Independent reported on Friday that an Egyptian source called Ethiopia's expulsion order "unfortunate" and "unjustified", saying Cairo has consistently refused to interfere in the internal affairs of other states, and accused Ethiopia of trying to blame external parties for its domestic crises. Ethiopia's foreign ministry cited only the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and gave no reason. Radio Tamazuj named the expelled Egyptian diplomat as Ahmed Moharam Ahmed Soliman.

Egypt's state news agency MENA reported on Friday that Egypt had declared a counsellor at the Ethiopian embassy in Cairo persona non grata and given him 48 hours to leave. An Egyptian official said the step followed the principle of reciprocity and called Ethiopia's decision "unfortunate and unjustified". Egypt's foreign ministry issued no formal statement.
