Deutsche Welle reported on 29 September that 11 people were killed and 15 wounded by artillery fire on the market in Alamata, in southern Tigray, on Saturday. Residents told DW the shelling came during the market's opening hours. Militia members in the area said government forces had fired the artillery. DW said the claims could not be independently verified and that an ENDF spokesperson had not responded to a request for comment.

Wazema reported on 30 September that the Ethiopian National Defence Forces had taken Niraq, the administrative seat of Abergele district in the Waghemra zone of Amhara region. It said the town had been held for more than five months by Tigray forces and allied Agaw militia. The report could not be independently verified.

The Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau said in a statement issued in Mekelle on 29 September that Tigray faces what it called an existential threat and is defending itself against the threat of annihilation. It said the Tigray Army and allied forces are continuing operations on all fronts, and acknowledged civilian casualties from aerial attacks, drone strikes and other bombardment. It also said information about an ongoing conflict is often incomplete and hard to verify.

Al Jazeera reported on 29 September that the Ethiopian military said about 270 Tigrayan fighters had been killed and more than 200 wounded in the North Wollo area. The army's figures could not be independently verified, and the Tigray forces have not responded to them.

Shabelle Media Network, citing Al Jazeera, names the towns retaken by federal forces as Mekoni, Wajena and Adi Gudom. Adi Gudom is about 39km from Mekelle. The report could not be independently verified.

Wazema reported on 30 September that the Ethiopian National Defence Force has advanced more than 150 kilometres into Tigray in the direction of Mekelle, and that federal troops took Niraq, the administrative centre of Abergele district in the Waghemra zone of Amhara region, on 29 September after it had been held by Tigray forces and allied militias for five months. It said fighting continued on 29 September across Tigray, Amhara and Afar. The report could not be independently verified.

Reuters said two diplomatic sources confirmed that Alamata had fallen to pro-government forces, while a third said the forces had entered the town but that it was unclear who controlled it. The agency said it could not verify video showing soldiers marching through Alamata carrying Ethiopian flags, and that spokespeople for the Ethiopian military and the TPLF did not respond to requests for comment.

Valerie Browning, co-founder of the Afar Pastoralist Development Association, told the Associated Press that about 150,000 people have been displaced in Afar since the latest fighting began. The estimate was carried by Al Jazeera and Addis Standard on 29 September and could not be independently verified.

Al Jazeera reported on 29 September that a military source told it government forces had already advanced and were heading towards or surrounding Mekelle, the Tigray capital. The source was not named and the claim could not be independently verified.

ACLED said in its Ethiopia update of 28 September that senior Tigrayan military figures and members of the TPLF, including former interim regional president Tadesse Werede and the head of intelligence of the Tigray Defence Forces, had reportedly been detained after being accused of sharing information with the federal government. ACLED gave no date or place, and the report could not be independently verified.

EEPA said in its situation report of 28 September that Major General Gebre Dilla, a TPLF military commander, and the head of the Tigray Police Force had gone over to the Ethiopian National Defence Force. The same report said the ENDF North East Command had claimed killing 436 TPLF fighters, wounding 220 and capturing 44 as of 25 September, and that the air force had carried out 17 drone strikes. EEPA gave no date or place for the defections. Neither claim was carried by any wire service or Ethiopian state outlet and neither could be independently verified.

Africanews reported that the conflict monitoring group ACLED has confirmed that pro-government forces took Alamata, in southern Tigray, on Monday. The capture was first announced on Facebook by the Tigray Peace Force, a pro-government splinter group. Africanews said the TPLF had meanwhile taken Erebti in Afar and was reported to be trying to cut the supply route from Djibouti, and that heavy fighting was continuing in Amhara, including near Lalibela.

Al Jazeera reported that after taking Alamata, Ethiopian federal forces were pushing on towards Mekhoni and Maychew in southern Tigray. The report said phone and internet outages across Tigray were making accounts of the fighting difficult to verify.

Reuters reported on 28 September that the Tigrai Peace Force, a pro-government militia, said it had taken Alamata, and posted video on Facebook showing soldiers marching through the streets of the town waving Ethiopian flags. Reuters said two diplomatic sources corroborated the claim, and that spokespeople for the Ethiopian military and the TPLF did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Reuters reported that Ethiopian federal troops and allied militiamen had taken Alamata. In Afar, Tigray forces were reported to be advancing on Afdeera after taking Erebti.
